Every one of these photos is terrible and hilarious. It’s like, after the New Nine, LIFE Magazine just went, “Screw it. No more drawn out photo shoots. We’re just going to take candid snaps at the press conference, and who cares how silly they look?” To wit:

We all know, looking back, that these fourteen were brilliant and talented. But if this article had been my first introduction to Group 3, I would have assumed by the wording that they were fairly mediocre and that LIFE was trying to cover that up:

This post is a love note to 1960.

The mere thought of of smoking indoors is anathema today - imagine a time when you could have a cigarette dangling from your mouth IN THE NASA ASTRONAUT SUIT TESTING ROOM, AS AN ASTRONAUT. You can’t imagine it, can you? It’s too incredible.

The high-waistedness of John Glenn’s slacks, the innocent way he’s clearly judging Deke’s butt…”Deke, I gotta tell you, these long johns are doing wonders for your hindquarters!”…just everything about this photo makes me happy.

HAWT. Incidentally, am I the only one who wants this astro-journalism show the Mad Men people are working on to basically just have the exact same cast as Mad Men?

OH YES JESUS Ricky Gervais as Wally would be AMAAAAYYYZING. And you’re spot-on about Kraft, too!

However, I know you were just trying to fit Phil Collins in there somewhere, hahahahaha and wouldn’t you want to play a 60s newspaperman, with a PRESS card sticking out of the band of your fedora, a transistor radio in your pocket and a neverending supply of coffee and cigarettes? :)

Also: Josh Brolin as Gordo Cooper and STEVE BUSCEMI AS AL SHEPARD,.

And all of our characters show up in the background in diner scenes talking and geeking out and it isn’t even a big deal or relevant to the main characters, but it’s there as canon that we all know each other and all the viewers can imagine what sort of plotline we have going on in the background.

This is incredible. If this show falls through, can we just do it ourselves? Because I almost feel like the Tumblr space folks could do a better job of writing it.
If it does go into production, however, I swear I’m going to go to wherever it’s being filmed and become an extra. That would be the best possible thing. Who’s with me?

I’m with you a thousand percent.

And it would be hilarious if we all chose a plot line and wrote an episode :)
