Why is this so hilarious?
Remember how this was a legitimate strategy?
It’s actually kind of cute, isn’t it? I want one.
Wally Schirra did an interview some years ago and mentioned that Gus Grissom was really into this landing method, and everyone had to dissuade him from it:
(Grissom) was trying to fly a vehicle that would come down on a little parachute like a hang glider, and he almost didn’t live through it. We said, “We’re not going to do that.” We all said that in that case, “We’re not going to do that.” He said, “Anybody else have an opinion?” “Nope. That’s our opinion.”
He made it sound like an episode of NASA Interventions.
That means it was fun.
I am trying to picture Gus just sitting there with a little chart of how this thing worked and showing it to the group and just being like, “this is a good idea, you guys. You guys. This is a good idea.”
Why am I not shocked he thought this was cool.
Grissom: Hey, guys, why are you all here? What the hell is going on?
Glenn: Golly gee, Gus old buddy, we wanted to talk to you. Here, have a seat.
Cooper: Um, okay, Deke. It’s time for you to read your letter first.
Slayton: Gus, your addiction to this crazy ass capsule parachute thing has done the following to our friendship…
INTERVENTION! INTERVENTION! INTERVENTION!
Somehow I don’t have this in .gif form and that makes me sad.
